Classic Relief
Griffins holding up a lyre.
Themselves supported by leaves.
Punctuated, stamped with flowers.
Reassuring, static swirls.
Embossed, embedded arabesques.
In shadows of white, light flooded
above my head. An Easter egg’s
shape, spread flat like maps. Molded,
solid ceiling, an upended
anchor from which dangle flights
unfancy. Iron, stern appendages.
And tires, exhaust, churn the brown snow.

Diane G. Martin is a recipient of the Diana Woods Memorial Award. She has written five poetry books and a collection of stories.
